4 CITATIONS AND SYSTEMS
Whenever a bibliographic citation is mentioned in the text, the source consulted must be indicated. For standardization purposes, it is recommended to cite by the author's last name, the reference number superscripted, followed by the publication date, as follows:
a) when the author's name is not included in the sentence, the corresponding number(s) for the author(s) should be indicated at the end of the sentence.
Ex.: Studies with magnetic resonance imaging demonstrate several previously unknown changes in the temporomandibular joint.
b) when the author's name is part of the sentence, only the date and page consulted appear in parentheses. Ex.: Silva (2000) cited that "studies with magnetic resonance imaging demonstrate several changes [...]" Silva (2000) stated that studies with MRI demonstrate several changes [...]. c) For works by the same author, from the same year, lowercase letters of the Latin alphabet are added to the date without spacing. Ex.: For Silva18 (2000a) studies with magnetic resonance demonstrate several changes [...]. Silva29 (2000b) cited that studies with magnetic resonance demonstrate several changes [...].
d) When there is a coincidence of authors with the same surname and the same date, the initials of their first names are added. Ex.: For Silva18, L. (2000) studies with magnetic resonance demonstrate several changes [...]. Silva19, M. (2000) cited that studies with magnetic resonance demonstrate several changes [...].
e) When the work belongs to two authors, the surnames of the two authors are indicated, separated by a comma, followed by the year.
Author included in the sentence
According to Kreiborg and Cohen (1992), the most pronounced phenomena before [...].
f) When the author is not included in the sentence. Ex.: The most pronounced phenomena before therapy are [...] (same as item 4, letter a).
g) When there are more than two authors, the surname of the first is indicated, followed by the Latin expression et al., and the year. Ex.: According to Abreu et al. (1990), the most pronounced phenomena before [...].
h) When dealing with different publications, the surnames of the authors and the year are indicated.
Authors included in the sentence:
Ex.: Abreu et al. (1990), Kreiborg and Cohen9 (1992) and Silva18 (2000) stated that the most pronounced phenomena before [...]
Authors not included in the sentence:
Ex.: Some studies1,9,18 have investigated the most pronounced phenomena before [...].
i) In works published by collective entities, the source must be mentioned in parentheses at the end of the citation.
Ex: The Brazilian Educational System obeys consultative norms and goals (BRASIL3, 1990).
j) Cited by other authors (apud) Abreu et al. (1990 apud Cohen9, 1992) stated that a certain degree of responses [...].
NOTE: This resource, however, should be avoided as much as possible. It is always recommended to search for the original article.
5 REFERENCES
References should be formatted according to the Vancouver Style. Every cited author must be listed in a list called REFERENCES, ordered according to their citation order in the text.
Journal titles should be abbreviated according to PubMed and printed without bold, italics, or underlining, and should not be punctuated, having the same presentation in all references. In publications with up to six authors, all are cited; above six authors, the first six authors are cited followed by the Latin expression et al. Personal communications, works in progress, and unpublished works should not be included in the reference list, but cited in footnotes.
