The altar of insubmissions: aesthetics and religious coexistence in the 2017 Mangueira parade

This paper analyzes the 2017 Estação Primeira de Mangueira carnival parade, "Só com a ajuda do Santo" (Only with the Help of the Saint), through the lens of rebellious epistemologies and the social history of culture. It investigates how the narrative conceived by Leandro Vieira operated as a metalanguage for the act of believing,
potentially transforming the samba runway into a territory for negotiation and the affirmation of Black and peripheral identities. By analyzing the official "Abre-Alas"
guidebook and theoretical frameworks regarding "Black culture" and "street opera" the study explores how the school may have subverted colonial catechesis by celebrating a popular and syncretic form of Catholicism. The parade is suggested to function as a pedagogical device that validates ancestral knowledge, presenting samba as a possible instrument for resistance and the decolonization of the Brazilian sacred.
