This paper aims to analyze the relationship between citizenship and the fragility of sanitation services in three precarious settlements in the Municipality of São José dos Campos, in the State of São Paulo (Brazil). This research adopted a dialectical approach and employed a mixed methodological procedure, combining quantitative and qualitative variables. The results of this study reveal that the residents of these precarious settlements face significant challenges due to the scarcity of public basic sanitation services, which has a considerable impact on their citizenship. These findings are relevant as they unveil existing social disparities and can be used as a tool to stimulate further studies aimed at promoting comprehensive citizenship in peripheral communities.
