THE INFLUENCE OF SOCIO-HISTORIC DISCOURSES ON THE ACT OF ASSUMPING BISEXUALITY

Abstract

This article is an excerpt from a doctoral research in development which studies the influence of socio-historical discourses on the acceptance of bisexuality. More specifically, the research seeks to understand factors involved in the act of coming out or not as bisexual at different times, taking into account socio-historical discourses that influenced the subjects' choices. This is, therefore, a field research carried out through interviews with subjects born between the 1960s and 2000. In this article, in dialogue with studies of discursive semiotics (Greimas and Courtés, 2013; Fiorin, 2000; Barros, 2011; 2014) and from the sociosemiotics perspective (Landowski, 2012), we analyzed an interview with one of the study participants: a bisexual woman born in the 1990s. The research data shows how discourses and ideologies influence the subjects' choices, mainly. in relation to bisexuality, demonstrating the weight of family, religious and social discourses on the interviewee's decisions. They also contribute to a broader understanding of aspects related to bisexual identity and point to the need for a more inclusive space within society and the LGBTQIA+ movement.
