ABSTRACT

Relationships between vegetation gradient and soil attributes in mangrove stands at the Furo Grande, Bragança-PA

This work presents an analysis of the relationships between the vegetation gradient of mangrove and soil variables. The fieldwork was carried out at the Furo Grande, Bragança-PA, where structural attributes of this vegetation and physical and chemical soil properties were measured. Only two species were recorded in the study area: Rhizophora mangle and Avicennia germinans, totalizing 1211 individuals. The principal component analysis (PCA) showed that 89,2% of the soil attribute variations were explained by the first five components, indicating a saline and nutrient rich environment, being C, Clay, Al, Ca, and N, the most important variables regarding the regression analysis´ results. The biotic variable Dominance comfirmed the formation of almost pure stands at the sites #01 and #02, being Site#03 a mixed one. However, the analysis of the physical and chemical attributes did not generate a soil mosaic related to the vegetation patterns. Such dissociation between the vegetation and soil mosaic seems to be associated, either with the size of the study area (1 ha) and with other abiotic variables not measured in this study or even with the fact of this vegetation pattern be only considered as a result of interindividual competition.
