ABSTRACT

This study is a follow up the survey of postlarval and juvenile shrimp of genus Penaeus intwo canals of São Luis Island, Maranhão State, Brazil, pointing out that the browmn shrimp Penaeus (farfantepenaeus) subtilis is by far the most abundant in this area.

The density of shimp postlarvae and juveniles was estimated through sampling tows covering an area of 690 m 2. Weighing of all individual caught supplied the fifures on biomass, expressed as kg/km2. At the same time data were also gathered on temperature, salinity and pH.

In order to look for possible sources of sampling variation, the following factors have benn considered in the analysis: period of the year as rainy season (January – June) and dry season (July – December), moon phase, day and night shifts, and five stations distributed along the two canals.

The main results to come out from the analysis are as follows:

1 – Mean values of temperature, salinity and pH of the water, in the studied area, were higher during the dry season, the larger difference being found with the salinity.

2 – The mean annual value of pH (8,00) characterizes and alkaline environment, probably with low indices of organic and industrial pollution.

3 – The mean annual values of density of shrimp postlarvae  and juveniles, over the year are 39,266 individuals/km2 and 21,362 individuals/km2, corresponding to biomass values of 37,42 kg/km2 and 55,37 kg/km2, respectively.

4 – Density and biomass values of shrimp postlarvae and juveniles were as a whole, higher during the dry season.

5 -  Density of postlarcvae and juveniles, as calculated in the nighttime shift, was higher in the dry season, where as in the daytime shift that was higher in the rainy season.

6 – Reduction in density of postlarvae and juveniles from January onwards may be linked with an outward dispersion of individuals to the open sea.

7 – The São Luis Island may be considered as an important share of the habitat of the brown shrimp, Penaeus (Farfantepenaeus) subtilis, where this species completes its life cycle through reproduction.
